My Painting Practice : Classical - Contemporary Fusion

For more than 25 years, I have been investigating figurative painting and it’s concerns with identity and recognition. The character of my work expands upon the idea of the body, with overlapping relationships of intense light and direct observation can build the emotional engagement. The painted figure presents an opportunity for a reciprocal relationship – between the viewer and subject – a recalling of shared experiences and associations – becoming a metaphor for personal disclosure. The portrait – like representation enhances the psychological realism and becomes a window or a mirror that bridges both the private and public worlds. I continue to investigate these notions through my personal style of realism and representational imagery. I search for a visual language that offers alternatives to the painting tradition and a new reading of portraiture.

My Teaching Philosophy : Cultivating the Imagination

As a Teacher / Facilitator, I wish to create a nurturing environment that inspires and facilitates the creative process. I believe that the main goal is to build the student’s confidence, building upon small successes, developing and accessing their imaginations while developing a creative practice. Dynamic and multi-layered activities will develop the student’s ability to widen their perspective, while maintaining a greater understanding of the art they are studying.

In class we will be using techniques that offer methods of self-expression, self-discovery and the ability to discern which materials will best facilitate the desired expression. By deepening their curiosity through this process, the inner world of the student expands, their levels of engagement with the creative process now becomes part of the foundational skill-set for excellence.

Mentor

I offer personalized council, support and encouragement. As in all my collaborations, I am fully invested in you; my time, my experience, and guidance for you to find your own solutions - not for me to solve them for you. As this is not a typical structure as in teaching a class, this arrangement will have more of a freeform and open ended creative exploration purpose - goals will be given individual consideration; time needed and direction for a deeper exploration of goals.

As the Mentee, you are ready to invest yourself in the process and commit your time, energy and your passion.
